Brideshead Revisited

Apparently there is a new film version of Brideshead Revisited in the works. It is scheduled to come out in the fall of this year in Britain, but not scheduled yet to come out in the US. From what I can tell, there are well known parties involved both as actors and directors, so it has the potential to be quite good. However, the Internet rumors have mentioned that the film will be taking an Anti-Catholic slant. How is this even possible of Brideshead? It would be quite sad if this beautiful story were to be distorted in this way. I'm sure as the release date draws nearer more info will become available.

In the meantime, the 1981 BBC version, though very long, is excellent. The book of course is better, but for those who enjoy a good book-turned-movie, the BBC version is well done. Most public libraries have it on DVD. Though not appropriate for young viewers, mature teens and young adults will enjoy this very much in these bitter cold days of winter.

Ah, yes, this is one of my watch-at-least-once-a-year movies now (though I only saw it for the first time about three years ago). I think my oldest daughter is almost ready for the book, but I think I'll wait on the movies for a few years yet with her.

I just finished reading the book for the second time this fall and it's certainly one you can return to again and again. It's amazing to me that they kept the story so intact in the movie - especially if you see the special features and understand how many of those making the film didn't quite "get" it.

Aah, I have heard it said that the BBC production of Brideshead is the very best, most faithful version of a literary work ever brought to the screen.

Yikes, the guy playing Charles Ryder looks awfully old for the part!

Michael Gabon (Dumbledore) is in the new movie, but it does not say who he will play, I'm guessing the elder Lord Marchmain. I really enjoyed Laurence Oliver as Lord Marchmain in the BBC version, it certainly will be hard to top.

It looks like he plays the older Ryder-- probably in the present time before it goes back to the flashback.

There is a much younger actor listed in the website also as Ryder-- for sure he plays the younger Ryder.
